Working fine

I thought I would drop you a quick email to let you know that I pulled my sailboat, Exeter, out of the water last Friday and had a chance to inspect the propeller after a summer’s worth of sailing in Chicago. Attached are several photos. When the boat first was on the hard, the bottom was covered in a thin slime with no major growth. This is usual for boats in Lake Michigan. After a pressure wash, the propeller looked as shown in photo 1. After a quick, mild acid wash, the propeller looked as shown in photo 2. Looks like brand new! The only interesting thing to report was that my magnesium anode on the propeller shaft was quite severely consumed. I still may be having a stray current issue on the dock. It did its job and there didn’t seem to be any corrosion issues with the propeller.
So, overall, I am very pleased with my Orion propeller. I changed the pitch to be right on 20 degrees and will see how this works out next year. The only thing I would recommend to EWOL would be to also offer the spinner anodes on the propeller to be made out of magnesium. This would double protect the propeller for sailing in fresh water. (note: we have now magnesium anodes available in our shop online)

It is working fine and the performance seems better than the three bladed M… that I replaced. It is smoother when motoring and seems to be a little bit faster when just motoring at idle speed. I still don’t have the pitch set perfectly. At launch, I went with a 18 degree blade setting which is a little bit low. The engine (Yanmar 2GM20F), easily can rev up to 3600 and the boat speed is a little bit over 6 knots. Shortly, I will be setting it to 19 degrees and see how this works.

Marked improvement

Thank you for those valuable recommendations which I will follow carefully. We sailed for about two month with your propeller which works perfectly with a clear improvement of speed at sail and easy maneuvers in harbours. It was in perfect conditions when we took the boat out water.

Best regards

Working perfectly

The propellers are working perfectly, I have excellent experience with them, attached please find 3 pictures taken on the 14th of March 2017.

Even the Rope cutters have been a good decision, they work perfectly !

More than happy

I am more than happy with you product, the propellers have been an excellent combination with the boat and the new Yanmar 4JH80 engines. The new engines are a common rail fuel system which is computer controlled therefore it is very easy to see on the instruments even slight differences. While underway with both engines just idling over if I pull up a sail I can see the fuel consumption drop.

Where you propellers come into their own however is in tight situations like docking while travelling in tight situations , in a new marina where the tide or wind is causing problems. The thrust and instant response is amassing making docking in new places under difficult conditions a piece of cake. On one other occasion I was crossing a coastal bar when I encountered a 3 meter swell in which the boat just handled with ease at lower RPMs. I believe again the thrust engine combination was reason .

There some interesting figures come out of the boats performance by comparison of the “A…prop” and the EWOL prop At 2,500 RPMs. The EWOL props push the boat along at 9.5 knots using 3.5 litres of fuel per side.

With the A…prop although they are 17 inch in diameter the boat for the same RPM 2500 is only doing 8 knots and using 4.7 litres per hour per side.

I find the difference in handling the cat very noticeable especially when trying to position the boat in a busy marina. With the EWOL I have fingertip control at very low RPM but the A…. Prop I have to use lots of RPM to get a response.

A World Champion's comment

I am very happy with the general operation both forward and in reverse. We have a perfect compromise between speed and consumption, with few noises and vibrations.
Our boat is specially optimized for racing, the choice of the EWOL propeller was right for having the minimum amount of sailing resistance.

Perfect Propeller

Test passed, perfect propeller, I solved the problem of the stern moorings with ewol, I recommend it to the “alpisti” with the A42, excellent product and owner careful to take good care of the customer even after the sale, a quality that is now a rarity

Everything is fine with the propeller

Everything is fine with the propeller after having done as advised by you. Four marks to plus, good performance and regular diesel consumption.
Thank you very much, I remember it was a week-end when I needed your help – and I got it from you.
Warm regards

The propeller works very well

I installed the EWOL propeller on my boat, a Hallberg Rassy 45 with TMD31D engine. The propeller works very well both as a cruising speed in forward gear and in maneuverability.

Also good is the flag position that allows me to sail quickly and without rotation noise from the propeller

Completely satisfied

On my current boat I have installed an EWOL propeller for several years now and I am completely satisfied with it. The propeller is light enough to be well tolerated by my sail drive. In motor maneuvers it transmits safety while sailing “disappears” allowing a perceptible increase in performance. The possibility of micrometric adjustment of the pitch even with the boat in the water and in total autonomy represents an additional added value as it completely eliminates the fear of mistaking the pitch value in the purchase of a new propeller

Dear EWOL,

I just wanted to let you know, that the EWOL propeller has been fantastic during PolarQuest2018 to and around Svalbard.
Due to the robust and over-dimensioned 4 blade design, forward performance was as good as the original fixed propeller without increase of fuel consumption (3.2 litres/hour at cruising speed). Gain whilst sailing is significant and produces much less wear and noise. Reverse propulsion is most impressive and a more than useful feature when navigating in uncharted waters, where it is vital to be able to stop at once. Even though 2018 was a record year in lack of ice, we sailed along the ice edge for hours. Due to the ’round’ design of the propeller blades, contact with pieces of ice didn’t harm the propeller. The only improvement needed has been be to reduce the pitch of the blades in forward position allowing to produce more thrust at low speed, especially when beating against strong winds. Well, this has been done easily!

Since I saw the propeller on exhibit, I was confident in the design of EWOL and our experience has been more than positive. Thank you for your support.
